PIERRE-AUGUSTE RENOIR

Pierre-Auguste Renoir 25 February 1841 – 3 December 1919 was a French artist who was a leading painter in the development of the Impressionist style. As a celebrator of beauty and especially feminine sensuality, it has been said that “Renoir is the final representative of a tradition which runs directly from Rubens to Watteau.
Titled “Sur La Plage, a Berneval”, drypoint etching on laid paper, signed in the plate
lower right. After Renoir’s 1892 etching, likely printed later. Two female figures sitting
on the beach watching bathers frolic in the water. Translated to “On the Beach , at
Berneval”. Metallic tag under drawing with name of artist, years alive, and title of
piece. Pierre-Auguste Renoir was a French painted originally associated with the
Impressionist movement. His early works were typically Impressionist snapshots of
real life, full of sparkling color and light. By the mid-1880s, however, he had broken
with the movement to apply a more disciplined, formal technique to portraits and
figure paintings.
